Congratulations to the Posthumously Awarded Nobel Peace Prize Recipient; Professor Manning Marable.

 May 13, 1950 - April 1, 2011

Collateral thoughts subsequent to tribute initially posted April 11, 2011:

This is indeed an honor to recognize, again, the honest and painstakingly pursuit of Malcolm X's life story by this prolific scholar, Dr. Marable.  He wasn't around to hear, read or be confronted by the naysayers or critical thinkers of this endeavor.  It was compounded by the outright hostility of many for what they perceived as a betrayal and besmirchment of Malcolm's legacy.  I've read various op-ed pieces, posts, essays and viewed interviews on the latter and some points were well taken, yet, we must realize that sometimes our heroes are just human beings with frailties and rough edges.  They've been given talents and abilities that we've come to admire, however, facets of their humanity can and have challenged us.  Such was the case with Malcolm X.  The biography of his wife Betty Shabazz after her death revealed more than many of us wanted to know.  There have been missteps by his offspring that also contributed to the ongoing drama of one of our 20th century heroes.

How does one celebrate a posthumous award?  It's a certainty that Professor Marable didn't complete this in a bubble.  He had assistants, his family and friends who were a part of  that prolonged mission and we celebrate them for their roles in making his work worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize.  And yes...we honor the memory of Professor Manning Marable.

Tribute Posted April 11, 2011

Dr.Manning Marable was an exceptional scholar and activist with a long history of fighting for the rights of the oppressed not only in the U.S.but on a global scale. The above is a tribute to Dr. Marable by Dr. Michael Eric Dyson as we mourn the death of this powerful gentleman who succumbed to complications of pneumonia.  On the Dyson program re-aired from May 19, 2010, he addressed his then current work on an  exhaustive and well researched manuscript; Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, which   was completed by Dr. Marable and scheduled for release April 4, 2011. This 10-year endeavor will prove to be quite enlightening and one that no doubt will keep scholars, activists and freedom-loving folks in critical thought and analysis for some time to come. He shall be missed.

Dr. Marable is survived by his wife,  Dr. Leith Mullings,  a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology and prolific author, 3 children and 2 step-children.

I just finished reading a few articles on Marable at the New York Times, a remarkably gifted man whose life illustrates the importance of questioning the current hegemony with the intregrity of academic rigor. Thank you for posting this interview.
